Antioxidants. Do We Really Need Antioxidants?

What Are Antioxidants?

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the report, I must admit, while researching this topic I found myself reading many of the articles and studies with the voice of Ben Stien in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in my head.  While doing so, the boring info, became a little more endurable.  So try it out with the first two paragraphs, I do.  :-)

An Antioxidant is a molecule that stops and reverses the oxidation of other molecules like human cells.  So what is oxidation?  Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons or hydrogen from a cell to an oxidizing agent.  This process is what produces Free Radicals.  Free Radicals attack Healthy Cells looking for electrons to bring them back into balance.  This in turn starts a chain reaction, which causes cell damage or death.  When free radicals are left unchecked our bodies will let us know with signs like, Rapid Aging, Arthritis, Fatigue and Inflammation.  Free radicals can also lead to diseases like Cancer and Heart Disease.   Antioxidants are your body’s “NavySeals” against free radicals, antioxidants can turn back the clock on the damage done to our What Antioxidants Dobodies.

What Causes Our Bodies To Have Free Radicals?

Our body will never be completely “Free Radical” (free).  Our body naturally produces them when fighting off disease.  So think about it… Lets say someone is fighting cancer, by which was caused by free radicals that our environment produced.  In defense our body produces more free radicals to “kill” the cancerous cells.  So when free radicals are left unchecked, could lead to a downward spiral, which could lead to chronic inflammation.  What are these environmental free radical producers?

  • Processed Food

 Alright So Antioxidants Are A Good Thing But How Do We Get’em?

Antioxidants are found in our food, primarily in fruits and vegetables.  Some of the richest antioxidant foods are:

  • Wild Blueberry
  • Tart Cherry
  • Prune
  • Camu Camu
  • Pomegranate
  • Winter Cherry
  • Acai
  • Tomato
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Brussel Sprout

It’s suggested to consume between 5 & 8 servings of fruits and vegetables per day to maintain a healthy life style.  That doesn’t include the amount of antioxidants you need to get yourself back to a healthy state.   The problem with that suggestion is two fold.  1.  How can a person get all of the antioxidant rich food every single day and 2.  Who has the time to eat all of the food every single day?  And to compound the problem further, the food we get from the grocery store, just ain’t like they usta make’em.  Most of them are lacking in minerals  and the harvest process doesn’t capture the full nutritional potential of the food.  So what can a person do?

Ok before we get ahead of ourselves, lets get back to the Coffee Berry.  What is it any way?  If you’re like me,  you didn’t know that the coffee bean comes from a fruit…  I know crazy huh?.?  Who knew, but it’s true.  Coffee has been enjoyed as a beverage dating all the way back to the 11th century, but the cherry like fruit, if not eaten off the plant, was discarded as waste.  But that all changed about 25 years ago when researchers and Doctors noticed that those who harvested the coffee bean looked and felt so young.  The Doctors couldn’t believe that 80 and 90 year olds were harvesting the coffee bean and to further their disbelief that the 80 and 90 year olds would work 15 on up to 18 hour days in the sun and still look like they were in their 60’s.  So the research was on.  They discovered that the Coffee Berry is the king of antioxidant rich foods by far.  For many years the blueberry was the king of antioxidants, then the Acai fruit took the title of king surpassing the blueberry by 141 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) points.  Side note ORAC is a way of ORAC of the coffee berrymeasuring antioxidants in a food.  The higher the ORAC score the more free radicals it will get rid of.  One gram of blueberry has an ORAC of 24, one gram of Acai fruit has an ORAC of 165.  That’s pretty good right?!  Of course it is….  Well the Acai didn’t hold the title very long, the Coffee Berry pretty much commands respect in the ORAC world with a rating of 15,000 in one gram… That’s right in just one gram the Coffee Berry pummels 15,000 Free Radicals!  Whoa!  That’s amazing!

Why Didn’t We Know About The Coffee Berry Sooner?

Great question.  The answer is, three hours after extracting the coffee bean, the fruit part would be completely depleted of ALL nutritional benefits.  As soon as they would break the skin of the fruit, it would produce an acid that would render it useless in just three short hours.  No one could preserve the fruit in time so it became waste.  If you were blessed enough to live near coffee plants and pick the fruit off the plant you would benefit from the King of Antioxidants other wise it would be worthless…. until…
